Future Taoiseach Grilled Over JobPath
Current Minister for Social Protection and Future Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was grilled in the Dáil last Wednesday by long term friends of the Campaign for Community Employment Reform, Deputies Willie Penrose and John Brady.
The Minister was put under increasing pressure by both deputies, and has once again fudged the issue rather than directly answer the questions raised. In response to Deputy Brady’s excellent point that referrals to CE schemes are drying up across the State due to the prioritization of Jobpath by the Department, the Minister stated that this was due to falling employment numbers. If this is so, why then do the two Private JobPath Companies enjoy referrals of up to 100 000 of Ireland’s long term unemployed while community services languish?
If the service was better for the participant, the Minister may have something of a point but this too is not borne out by the cold facts. Progression rates from CE Schemes to employment are 38%, while from JobPath they are just 25%, not only is the Minister preference for privatization of the welfare state dangerous for Community run services but for the participant as well.
We once again thank Deputies Willie Penrose and John Brady for their tireless efforts to bring our issues to the fore and for doing what they can in protecting our communities.
